Home accents - decorative furnishings that bring it all together

Size and color are the important features in home accents, when you are  decorating a particular space or area in a room. You need to co-ordinate these decor items with the color of your walls, floors and furniture so that they all compliment each other.

What to place choose these accents on is also important. For example; a modern glass vase would look out of place on a traditional coffee table with a Persian rug underneath it. You would want a more contemporary design to place in this area. The colors would be something that would pick up one or two colors in the rug and then one of the colors from your couch or chair.

Accents for the kitchen

Floral rugs in the kitchen area are always a nice accent in this room. For the walls every kitchen needs a decorative wall clock and a few pictures. For the kitchen table, candles as a centerpiece and small pendant lights for above the table really change the look in this area.

Accents for the living room

This is actually the hardest room to buy accents for. Because you have table lamps, artwork and a few small items on shelves. If you use too many decorative items this room will start to look too busy or cluttered. The trend today is for a more minimalist sort of look. Wide open spaces with feature pieces placed around the room. World globes are good decorative furnishings to use here.

The other problem is in most homes today there is an adjoining dining room that has to be taken into consideration. Most dining rooms have a buffet, hutch or tall corner cabinet, this is were you small collectibles should go. For the dining table and probably the coffee table, a glass centerpiece like a flower vase will add enough color and give each area a more unique look.

If you have a mantel over a fireplace in the living room keep your items down to about 5 decorative items, 3 if they are a little larger. Mantel clocks and a couple of framed family photos are quite popular.

Accenting the den

Depending on whether you use this room as an office or not doesn't really matter. Word globes, area rugs and possibly a table fountain work really well as a home accent. Wall hangings or tapestries will give your den a more formal look. Just like the living room or family room if you have an area on the floor or in a corner the best home furnishing to use here would be a floor vase.

Bathroom accessories and accents

This is the most popular room in the home to decorate and buy accents for. Because most people usually redecorate the bathroom once or twice a year you want to buy inexpensive accessories for your counter tops and vanity. For longer solutions buy a decorative sink faucet and a wall mirror.
