How to repair a broken coffee table with a glass top

What do you do if you crack or break a glass top end table or modern coffee table.

Fortunately you can fix it yourself. This type of damage is not too common but it does happen every now and then. Sometimes you will want to just go out and buy another table that is a little more modern or have more of an updated look to it. More times than not, you will really like the design you have and it can't be purchased anymore.

Fixing a broken glass top coffee table is a do it yourself project

What will be needed are the dimensions and thickness you will require the glass to be order get another one.

First think about the size of the top glass. If it was a good size that you liked keep it, if not you can go a few inches bigger or smaller. Just keep in mind you will want to keep the top in proportion to the base and the legs holding it up.

Next measure the thickness you will need for the replacement top, you can go thicker, but not thinner. Now head down to your local window and glass repair shop. Usually these shops also repair auto glass, but a window repair business is really what you are looking for.

Talk to their customer rep and tell them what it is for and give them the measurements. You could even bring the base with you and they might glue the glass top on for you. If they don't ask what type of clear glue will work best and where to buy it. Normally any home hardware store will have the type of glue you will need.

Questions that you will need to answer

  • how thick do you want the top to be (1/4 to 5/16ths inches is more than enough)
  • dimensions - length and width if it is square or oval. If it is round you will want to estimate the radius or total width. They can cut a circle out of these measurements.
  • color - do you want to keep the same color or have it tinted. If you choose to go with a tint, keep in mind your flooring and other furniture colors.
  • they will recommend you use a shatter proof glass or possibly a plexi or acrylic glass top for longer life.
  • if you do it yourself you will also need a solvent or cleaner to clean off the old glue.
  • if your old table that broke as rivets to hold the glass down, (some retro styles have these) you may have to buy a new one. But I think you could repair these also with a glue that is suitable for gluing glass on metal and wood.
  • If this doesn't seem to be something you want to do or it's time to buy a new coffee table anyway go here and see where to buy a modern coffee table or a contemporary table.
