If you wanted to make your own fire pit then you have to be a little more careful on what type of material you use. bricks are always safe if you also line the bottom of your fire box. Old barrels as long as they are not too rusted out.

In all cases if you are building your own and installing it in the ground you should use bricks to line the bottom. Also check with your local fire department to see if there are any special bylaws.
