No More Ugly Down SpoutsDecorative downspouts and rain chains are really cool and look a lot better than the standard drain pipe attached to your gutters. Some people call these decorative chains as Japanese rain chains. They come in different shapes from funnel cups to looped chains. My favorite is the Copper Tulip Rain Chain is Japanese in origin where rain chains have been used for hundreds of years to break the flow of water with elegant style. Rain chains install easily; simply mount onto your existing gutter system in place of a downspout. Chains are approximately 8 feet long, but can be shortened or combined with another unit for greater length. Funnel Cups are a beautiful alternative to metal or plastic closed gutter downspouts. These funnel cups are designed for buildings without eaves, or any flat surface application. These overlapping copper funnels have no splash and create a beautiful water fall effect. An interesting way to use these chainsMake your rain chain into a patio fountain I was in a garden store with my wife the other day and saw an interesting way to use these chains. If you have an arbor, trellis or some other type of pole you hang them on a bracket a few inches out. Buy a very small water pump and enough tubing to reach from the pump to the top of the rain chain. Run the tubing up the pole or other structure and secure it so you can't really see it. Extend tubing to the support bracket and down the top of the chain. Secure the end so that the water will fill the first cup, turn on the pump and let the water flow from the top to the bottom. This makes it into a Japanese rain chain water fountain. If you buy two or three to make a set or a water feature all you would need to do is put a T at the top and slit the water off to run down each chain. If you are looking for an interesting or really unique Christmas gift this has got to be it. They would also make and excellent housewarming gift or a gift from your friendly real-estate agent.
