Old world beauty in a kashan rug

I really love carpets and rugs for decorating and over years have found out they can be a real investment. Recently I wanted to add something different in my dining room, which is decorated in a formal look. I was thinking about one of the persian styled rugs but then a friend of mine mentioned Kashan rugs. To be honest I didn't know too much about this style of rug except it was made in the middle east. So not one to take anybodies word for it I started looking around for myself. I was very impressed with what I saw.

Kashan oriental rugs come from a city in central Iran, that has a long history of carpet weaving dating from the 16th century. You can tell it is a kashan because the all have a diamond shaped medallion with small matching spandrels on it. Made mostly of wool, with a few rugs woven in pure silk. They normally come in the traditional colors of reds and blues, but more recently because of their popularity in the international market these oriental rugs have been woven in paler beiges, with greyish blue and olive green tones.

These are large oriental rugs that need to be placed in a room that is at least 10 feet by 10 feet. The one I bought was 8X13, here is a picture of it; it took over 300 days and 3000 hours for a weaver to make it. I bought from a company called rugman who sells these types of rugs and carpets world wide.

You can see the diamond pattern in a few of these quite easily. But notice the intricate designs. This why I fell in love with these rugs. The colors blend in so well with wood or ceramic floors they look natural.

I also found a bit about the history behind these rugs

In the past, kings and rulers from afar would come in person to purchase rugs from this ancient persian city. You will find a few rugs on display in major museums around the world, with some dating from the 16th or 17th century when it was given one of the first Royal workshops.  It is thought, by some scholars, to be the city where the famous 'Ardebil' carpets might have been woven. By the end of the Second World War, it was estimated that the city of Kashan could operate some 12,000 professional looms simultaneously. The famous asymmetrical Persian knot is the only one used in the weaving of these fine carpets
