Planning your bathroom renovation in order to create unity

The trend in homes in the past 5 years have been to have a large bathroom as some people like to call them water closets. For our purposes we will stick to the common term of the traditional bathroom.

Decorating or renovating this room is normally first because it is the most used after the kitchen and it seems the most popular to add a decorative accessory.

The most important stage in planning a bathroom renovation is choosing the size and color of your bathroom plumbing fixtures.

If you are renovating the bathroom or redecorating you need to know which accessory to choose first

The tub is your first pick during the planning stage because it is the most important, and everyone loves a good soak in a comfortable soaker tub. Your main options are, an enamel tub with tiled walls, acrylic tube with tile or cultured marble walls, a clawfoot slipper tub and the standard fiberglass all in one three piece unit.

Many people are now selecting the enamel soaker tube with the arm and back rests. Here you need to make a decision on whether to upgrade your unit to an acrylic model with cultured marble tiles (plastic low maintenance tiles that look like marble), the cost should only be around $250 dollars. Most homes have a fiberglass bathtub because they are the easiest to clean and install without having to use grout and calking.

Countertops are another hard choice, selecting from the traditional arborite with drop in sink to marble or granite with the sleek and trim look of a one piece counter. Marble and granite are becoming more popular because of the cool feeling you get and is a contemporary look that goes will in all designs modern or traditional.

Your countertop will define what type of sink you will have, either drop-in or under cabinet mount, cost is about double of the standard arborite.

After these two choices comes your toilet or water closet. Color of course will be the same as your tub. Here you decide on whether you want a one piece or the standard twp piece, pay close attention to the water tank size and whether it is designed to save water. The flushing mechanism can be on the top, front or side. You can purchase electronic sensors for this if you prefer.

Next your flooring is where you want to pay particular attention to. Go to our home flooring section and review information there.  One word of caution here about using ceramic tile for the bathroom floor, it is cold on the feet unless you have heating in the bathroom floor.

Lino is by far the common flooring materials to use in renovations, easy to install and easier to keep clean and mop up water. Designer linoleum can cost just as much as tiles but is not as easy to damage. The look of lino can resemble tile except you will notice it is much softer and warmer to stand on in bare feet. But for a better reselling factor go with ceramic tiled floors.

After these renovation choices have been made it's time to choose your bathroom taps for the sink and bathtub. There are so many to choose from that we won't get into here. Just visit a few hardware stores to get a feel of the look you want. After this its vanity mirrors and bathroom lighting fixtures.

If you follow the above order you will have a luxurious bathroom that has all the components fitting together as a well designed unit.
