Custom curtains can solve many window decorating concerns

Is there too much light coming in or not enough? Room darkening shades and cellular shades can overcome these problems.

Think of the view you see through the window. Do you like it or do you want to hide it. Sometimes it’s not the window covering that we want to change.

If you do not like the view, it can throw off your perception of what the inside looks like. The only thing you can do here is hide with closed blinds or curtains.

If a room seems a little gloomy, look for colorful fabrics with wild prints. This is a great solution when a room is being shaded by a lot of trees and shrubs. If you like the view then a wood or faux wood blind might be better.

When looking through your window you have to think of privacy and what your needs are during the day and at night. One important aspect of this is what your window looks like from the road or what others see from the outside.

For tall and narrow windows a cornice or valance will lower the overall look. If you are using curtains extend them past the edges for the window frame to make them seem wider than they are.

Window blinds can be mounted on the outside. For windows that are too tall and you do not have any wall space to attach a curtain rod to, you can mount the hardware on the ceiling.

Short and wide windows in a group can be hard to decorate with a window treatment. Dining rooms sometimes have this problem. Extend a valance past the frames and much higher above the window than you normally would.

For windows near a corner, tab tops and swags are always a nice touch.

Skylights sometimes pose a problem in the hot summer months. It's nice to have all that light coming in, but it does get too hot. Cellular shades and woven blinds work really well here.

They can be a little difficult to install, the average person can do it with a good stepladder and a helper. The difficult part that you need to pay attention to is, running the cords and tracks down the side of the skylight that holds the blind close to the window
