Remote-controlled devices are now available so you don't need to do this by hand. The slats are normally kept together at the bottom with a chain or metal tabs to hold them straight. The slats are commonly made from wood, fabric, plastic. There are special verticals that can be custom made to fit most bowed, bay and angled windows.
