Decorating ideas, decor and accessories for  family room furniture

If you want your family to spend more time together and not hideaway in their bedroom all the time you need to add family room accessories that are more than just decorative. 

Glass vases, pictures with decorative frames and candy bowls are a favorite family room accessory to use here.

If you are buying a coffee table, they need to be the same height as the cushions on sofas, end tables need to be higher but lower than the arm rests.

Your furniture should have soft comfortable couches with lots of pillows. Adding a blanket throw always makes this room look like it was designed for comfort and a place where you want to spend some time. If you are worried about teenagers wearing out your couch or sofa you can always cover them with a furniture slipcover.

Try to avoid playing noisy games room but as a place in your home to have your family socialize and relax in comfort. This is the room you want the family to stay in when you are stuck in the kitchen.

Creating a fun and entertaining area with family room decor

Entertaining in the family room doesn't mean only when you are having friends or relatives over for a visit or party. If you want your children and teenagers to socialize with each other, there has to be accessories in this room that draws them there and keeps their attention.

Games appropriate for playing in the family room

All board games are or combination board games like chess and checker sets are a good addition to the entertainment area of the family room.

Backgammon games are another great game that can be played in a family without disturbing someone reading or watching TV. The playing surface will make all the difference. If you can't fit a table and chair set because of size restrictions an alternative  is a small accent table that is made to store all your games. they can be incorporated into your family room decor as an end table to have a lamp on by a chair or sofa.

Pool tables, air hockey and other large activities belong in a games room or in the basement.

Decorating and design - Sectionalize this room into zones

I would not put a computer in this area if you plan on watching TV the glare from a monitor is too strong and will always catch the corner of your eye when watching TV which would be very distractive. A small desk area in a corner or along a wall between the kitchen and where the family room begins would be a good spot as long as it is behind anyone watching television. Or as an alternative you could find a very decorative desk and use it as part of your living room decor.

If this room is off the kitchen which many times they are, you can still have two different colors that are quite striking but you need to blend the colors in as you move or from the kitchen to the seating area. You can do this with paint and wallpaper or with accents and accessories. Lighting should be done by area, no bright lights are needed because of the lighting coming from the kitchen area, you can control this by using dimmer switches.
