Buying real wood furniture

Tips for buying unfinished wood furniture
If you are thinking about buying unfinished wood furniture for your living room or family room be sure to pay close attention to the grain of the wood. The wood grain will have a plays a huge role in how it will look when you stain it.
Try to visit a furniture gallery to see which type of grain you prefer before you make your choice. Pay particular attention to how tight the grain is or if it is wide, each one will give your table or chairs a slightly different appearance. Oak, maple and birch all have different characteristics and will show a stain color slightly different.

This has to do with how the wood will look after you choose a color. Tight grains like oak look better with a light finish for a more traditional look. Wider grained woods look better in a dark almost black finish. The materials that the furniture is manufactured will define whether you are looking for modern, traditional or country living room furniture. Black or very dark stains are more modern while the lighter shades are more contemporary.

The real beauty of buying wood furniture is that you get to see exactly what it is you are getting. You can see if the wood has any knots, discolored spots or simply the grain is not matched well enough?
When furniture comes pre-finished, especially with very dark stain you can't tell what is underneath until it is years older and begins to show wear spots. Manufacturers that sell unfinished wood furniture normally use higher-grade boards in furniture production because they know you will see what is underneath.

Normally buying natural wood furniture is cheaper than pre-stained or finished wood
Mind you this only holds true if you can stain the wood yourself and obtain a nice even coat. If this something that you may find too tricky just go with a light oil or wax, teak used in outdoor furniture looks its best this way because it can weather to its own natural color.

The selection of stain and paint colors is limitless, which makes it easy to match any other home decor pieces you have. A simple trip to the local building supply store or paint center and they can match your existing woodwork. You will also be able to match your flooring better and carpeting. Another problem with stains that are applied unevenly is that they will eventually blister and peel. This is because they are normally sprayed with a gun which doesn't do as nice a job. When you finish your own furniture you know that the stain is applied evenly and thoroughly, for a durable, long life.

Too much wood in a room can be too much of a good thing
Be careful about buying too much furniture that is predominantly made up of wood, if you have laminate or wood floors in the living room. Too much of one thing can become overbearing very quickly. When decorating you will need to strike a balance between wood furniture and your wood or laminate floors. This can be a little tricky at times. Too much of one thing is never a good look in any room of your home. If you are trying to find a balance one of the easier ways to add more color and texture is with area rugs, Persian or braided, either style would look good.

Wesley Allan Metal Beds

A decorating friend of mine Louis called me up the other day to come over and look at her new bed she just received. It turns out she mostly wanted me to help her set it up. I was more than surprised to see that she had bought a beautiful Wesley Allen iron bed for herself. She had wanted new bedroom furniture for a long time but couldn't make up her mind on the style.

Being a stickler for quality I began looking over how well the wesley allen company built this wrought iron metal bed. The quality of welds is the most important feature when buying wrought iron furniture. The first thing I noticed was the heavy gauge iron they used and the welds were smooth and complete. They then poured a decorative casting over this to make a very solid one piece. The finish is powdered coated with a designer color and then baked on. I know a little about welding and powder coating because my dad was a welder. These manufacturing features produce a very strong and high quality piece of furniture. The next bit of business I looked at was the warranty that wesley allen offers - the limited lifetime warranty was a good offer.

I liked the brasilia model, because it is a nice transition from contemporary to modern. The design was influenced by the orderly alignment of the streets in Brazils capital city.

Wood Rocking Chairs

There is one furniture piece that every home needs to have in one room or another and that is a rocking chair. These classic wooden chairs are timeless and never go out of fashion or style, the same styles that were produced a hundred years ago are still being made today.
There are three rooms that have always been popular to have a rocking chair in and they are the family room, den and probably the most popular, the nursery.

Kitchen bakers rack

Keep your kitchen well organized with this metal bakers rack that has 4 shelves including one that is made of beautiful stone.

This is the rack that I have in my kitchen and has served me well for a number of years now. To keep it looking new every couple of months, I use a tiny bit of spray furniture wax on a cloth and then rub it on the steel frame.

The finish is classified as old steel. The main shelf is stone and it comes with a total of 4 shelves for optimum storage. The wine rack holds 12 bottles of wine.

The overall dimensions are 75.25 inches high x 37 1/2 inches wide and 17 3/4 inches deep.

To clean just dust frequently using a clean dusting cloth that will attract and hold dust particles. Do not use liquid or abrasive cleaners these could damage the finish.

Furniture for dorm rooms

It seem to be that time of year again when most college students phone home and say "mom I need dorm room furniture". True as this may be it does require careful planning and buying the right type of furniture that fits into a dorm room. These areas are normally quite small and need careful furniture placements.

Starting with the bed which should be a futon bed that you can use as a couch for seating. Then a storage trunk coffee table to maximize a small storage area. Then a small round kitchen table and chair set that the stools fit underneath. The best size would be the same as you would a small studio apartment.

Students don't need a lot of furniture in a dorm room, they just need well organized furniture that works and looks good. If it can be repainted at the end of the school year all the better. I have had three teenagers go through college and have found this selection in furniture to be the best. It lasts for a long time and they can use it after they graduate for decorating their first apartment.

Student computer desks are just about obsolete now with everyone having a laptop, all they need is a table to work on. The storage trunk coffee table was my daughters idea and worked very well. My husband made a lock for it so she could store things in it with out worrying about them being stolen.

Glass coffee table repair

I was asked by one of our readers about repairing a glass top coffee table that she has. The coffee table in question was a modern style and to replace the cost would not fit into her budget at this time. Besides that it was a friday and she was having a dinner party on saturday so there was no time to go shopping online or to a furniture store.

This type of repair can be down quite easily, as a do it yourself repair. All that is required is a bit of glue and a few measurements. It's as simple as running down to the glass repair shop. This should only take you one evening which would include glue drying times.

You could use this process really for fixing anytype of glass top table. Including end tables, coffee and sofa tables with 12X12 glass sections or a complete piece.

Repairing you table this way will save you more money and by the time you are done you will have a new modern coffee table.

I do recommend you re-finish the legs and coffee table base before you re-install the glass top.

Teenagers and your furniture

As a parent raising 4 kids I know what happens to your furniture when they all hit the teenage years. My beautiful furniture, mostly the couch and loveseat all took quite a beating. They didnt seem to share the same respect for my living room furniture as I did.

I had to have someone come in and professionally clean my furniture, once I even had to re-upholster my dining room chairs. Not anymore I found it considerably cheaper to buy dining chair covers and couch covers. I like the textured slipcovers better because they don't seem to show the dirt as much.

I found it fairly easy to put these on after I ironed out the wrinkles from the packaging, it only took my daughter and myself half an hour to do a large t cushion love seat and three cushioned couch.

I found the best colors for the family room to be the earthy tones, browns and beige, these seemed to go better with my flooring. The only problem I had was I used a solid color on one and with my laminate floors it was a little dull. Which turned out really well for me because I got to buy new accent rugs. Floor screens and room dividers

Blanket racks for bedrooms

Keep things organized and tidy in the bedroom!

Quilts, comforters and blankets normally adorn the bed and if your family is anything like mine they usually end up on the floor, covering up a nice bedroom rug. I finally purchased a blanket rack, which for some reason my teenagers thought was a pretty cool accessory and started to hang there blankets and comforters on it.
I found these racks to be one of the better bedroom furniture items in a long time. They look good and form an intricate part of my bedroom decor. I can now see the nice pillows and bed skirts that I purchased. The idea behind these wonderful furniture pieces is the same as a coat rack. If they see it they will use it.

Save your old recliner chair

One of my dads favorite chairs in our home was his recliner, I couldn't bring myself to get rid of this because fo the fond memories it brought back.

The problem was it was starting to look kind of tired and ratty so instead of throwing it out I decided to cover it with a recliner slipcover. I have to say I was pretty surprised how it turned out, it looks just like a new chair in our family room.

I thought finding a cover was going to be difficult because this chair had the side handle, I found one at surefit. Slip covers I have found are one of the quickest ways to redecorate a room and now they are the best way to say a memory.

Small kitchen table and chair set

There is a huge benefit to having your kitchen dining table as close to the food preparation area as you can. This is the most convienent spot for cutting down on your travel time in the kitchen and it makes cleanup go much faster. If you attached a pedometer to yourself and actually saw how much mileage you are putting on in the kitchen you would quickly see why you are so tired at the end of the day. How ever this is not always possible in small kitchens that are limited in space. If you want to create more space go with a pub style table and chair set and then add a barstool for by the counter incase you need extra seating.

For very small kitchens in apartments the right choice is a bistro dining table and chair set. You can purchase these in 2 and 4 chair sets. Sometimes these are referred to as bar tables or pub styles, but after you look at a decorative collection, you will notice that they are far from it. The key to getting around you tables and chairs is proper size and planning. Keep a minimum 32 to 36 inches between walls or cabinets and the edge of the table. For comfortable seating you will need approx. 12 to 14 square feet per person, so for four people 48 square feet will do nicely. Table size is relevant to this, a 42 inch round table will seat four, a 48 inch round, seats 6. If you like square and rectangular modern tables like I do figure on 21 to 30 inches of space per person.

About futon frames

A standard futon sofa is normally a bi-fold, meaning the frame consists of only two slat racks; the one you sit on and one you lean against. The standard frame accommodates a bi-fold mattress, meaning the mattress folds only once along its length.

Glass coffee tables

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about coffee tables. She wanted to buy a glass coffee table for the family room but was worried about her grandchildren coming over and having the toddlers fall onto the corner of it. This is a concern for everyone whether the table has a glass top or wood top. How many times has someone come into your home during a rainy day and placed their wet umbrella in a corner if your hallway. Now you have to mop up the water that has dripped down onto your entranceway floor.

Nornally it's my kids and I can tell you I am getting tired of cleaning up the floor. There is one solution to this and that is adding a very useful umbrella stand that comes in a antique black or brass finish.

I bought the black umbrella stand because I have light colored flooring and it looks very nice as part of my hallway furniture. It looks more like an accessory or accent that I have chosen as part of my decorating theme.

Furnishing a home office

The home office furniture over the past several years has undergone great changes since the introduction of the computer in our lives. Employees working from their homes and small home businesses are becoming common to us all. To be able to operate properly we need to be equipped with a smooth flowing workspace. Furnishings must meet the same needs as furniture in any corporate office and still be attractive as it may be visible as part of our home furnishings. Wood wall clocks, folding book shelves, lights, desks and build your own furniture. Steel storage cabinets, safes, file carts, studio tables, desks need to be squeezed into a room and still appear functional. To give yourself more space keep one filing cabinet in the basement or another room for records that you don't need all the time. Use 3 in 1 printers that contain a scanner and fax machine to give yourself more room.

Fun With Molding

Here are 5 easy do it yourself ideas that will spruce up your home.

1. Make your own picture frame out of scrap molding. Use your old photos or from pictures in a magazine. Measure and cut the molding to the size of what you want frame in. Nail and glue all pieces together. Have a piece of glass cut to size. Paint the frame to match your decor and hang to display.

2. Dress up a plain dresser. If you have a large dresser or cabinet take a couple of pieces of molding and miter the corners at a 45 degree angle to make it look better. Nail the moldings around the edges to make it look like detailing. This works best when you have large doors. It works on kitchen cabinets, bi-fold closet doors and even those plain old ugly bedroom doors.

3. Oversized mirrors are todays most popular home decor item for hallways. Take some very wide baseboards, miter the corners and nail and glue together. From a glass shop, get them to cut you a mirror to size ( this is the most expensive part, but it will save you a couple of hundred dollars) Tell them you are going to glue or fasten it to a piece of 1/4 inch plywood, they will tell you the best glue to use. Attach molding to the mirror as you would a picture frame and stand it up in the hallway. You can anchor it to the wall if you feel someone might knock it over.

4. No closet in the front entrance or hallway, no problem. A 5 pin coat rack with a shelf above it will do quite nicely. Use crown molding and door casings to form a box for the shelf part and find old door knobs with the shaft still attached for the coat rack part.

5. What else can you do with old moldings, well how about using them to build your own drawer organizer. you can custom fit to what ever you think you are going to store in each particular drawer. I did this for a couple of my kitchen drawers because the ones that I bought didn't fit what I wanted to store in them. It worked great.

The point I am really trying to make here is that you can do all kinds of decorating without having to spend too much money, just use your imagination.
