Holiday decorating

I was talking to one of our decorators today about keeping up with the latest paint color trends and how this relates to decorating your home for different seasons. Bev was telling me that paint manufacturers don't really come out with new colors every year normally it's about every 18 months or so and these are more of a shade of what they already have. What happens on a yearly basis is someone comes out with a new a new way to put different colors or shades together. Get enough people to do it and it becomes a trend.

We got on this topic because a few of our readers have been asking about holiday decorating and decorating a home for the different seasons. Mostly they wanted to know what color to paint. We don't recommend you change your wall colors every year. What is best is to use earthy tones because these will always be in style.
What you can do every once in awhile is repaint one wall a darker shade to make it look different. This is why you always write down the color codes from a paint can. This way you can just take in the code or sticker and they will know how to tint it to the right shade.

Earth tones work for all seasons.

The easiest way to think of this, if you like to decorate for the different holidays of seasons then just add decorative accents. We always tell people to split the year up into spring and fall. Spring colors will take you into the summer and then fall, where fall colors will transition into winter and then spring. February is the best month start adding spring colors because we are normally fed up with the winter and dull colors by now.
Decorating for thanksgiving is easy if you just add a few orange, brown and red accents and home decor. Add table linens that have a thanksgiving theme. After this decorating a room for Christmas is easy, all you will have to do is add a few more green and red ascents and decorations instead of browns. Your tree will add the blues, golds and silver colors that you need. To transition into spring you just remove the darker colors and replace with oranges and yellows in your table centerpieces.

If you are the kind of person that likes to have a wreath as wall decor all year round, simply take out a few seasonal colors and add a few dried flower to it.

If you like to keep up with the latest trends in colors, the problem is, they normally don't work all year round and they are hard to match your home furnishings to. It is best just to add a few accents to bring out these new colors. Accent rugs are a good choice to do this with. They are fairly cheap to buy and come in a variety of colors and textures. See here for more information about area rugs.

Another home accessory or furnishing that you should me using more of is decorative candles, these can be scented pillars, jar candles, votives or unscented tapered candles, as long as they are quality. If you buy a pillar candles you won't need to buy other decorations for your tables. They can be used all year round, which is good value for your money.

Because Christmas is closing in fast you really need to start thinking about how you are going to decorate your home. If you wait until late October or early November to buy online you will find it a little harder to find things. You certainly won't in shopping mall stores. All the really nice Christmas decorations are usually gone by the 1st of December in stores. Most retail outlets only carry a certain amount of seasonal home decor.

I know I got a little off track by talking about decorating for the christmas season but I am starting to get excited about it. Stay tuned: in the next couple of weeks we will adding a few of our newest ideas you can use this holiday season.
