Preparing for the fall season
Early september is the best time to inspect and prepare your homes interior and exterior for the fall and winter season. One change that usually slips everyone's mind is to change the direction of your cealing fan so that it creates an upwards draft so the warm air recirculates down from the ceiling area.
Exterior home inspection tips:
Look for loose or peeling pain and touch this up.
Check windows for drafts and seal with silicone.
Clean gutters before the rainy season.
Make sure your garage door seals tight to the cement to stop cold drafts and mice from looking for a winter home.
Interior home inspection:
Check and repair any furnace problems, replace air filters on any forced air systems.
Vacuum the baseboard units for electrical heat.
If you live in a very dry climate in the winter make sure you have a humidifier.
Inspect and clean your firelplace.
Put away all your spring and summer tools in an organized way into your gaden shed or garage.
Out in the garden:
Rake up all the leaves and keep grass as short as you can.
Fertilize the lawn with a winter food.
Mark on your calender when you will service your lawn mower and change its oil.
Cut back plants that are going to need it and cover with a mulch.
Feed your roses for the last time.
Check your water system for weak spots.
Turn your compost over and airate.
