Fall Yard Work

Early september is the best time to inspect and prepare your homes interior and exterior for the fall and winter season. One change that usually slips everyone's mind is to change the direction of your cealing fan so that it creates an upwards draft so the warm air recirculates down from the ceiling area.

Exterior home inspection tips:
Look for loose or peeling pain and touch this up.
Check windows for drafts and seal with silicone.
Clean gutters before the rainy season.
Make sure your garage door seals tight to the cement to stop cold drafts and mice from looking for a winter home.

Interior home inspection:
Check and repair any furnace problems, replace air filters on any forced air systems.
Vacuum the baseboard units for electrical heat.
If you live in a very dry climate in the winter make sure you have a humidifier.
Inspect and clean your firelplace.
Put away all your spring and summer tools in an organized way into your gaden shed or garage.

Out in the garden:
Rake up all the leaves and keep grass as short as you can.
Fertilize the lawn with a winter food.
Mark on your calender when you will service your lawn mower and change its oil.
Cut back plants that are going to need it and cover with a mulch.
Feed your roses for the last time.
Check your water system for weak spots.
Turn your compost over and airate.

This is also a great time to clean out your garage for the last time this season. To get a better idea on how to start or to find a few more garage storage ideas go here to our blog on garage storage ideas.

Juniper Bonsai Trees

Retirment gifts or are they the start of a new hobby

Whether you are looking for a unique gift for a gardener, retirement gift, house warming gift or for someone that wants to start a new hobby, juniper bonsai trees are the best idea yet .

Buying one of these tiny trees for someone is a very thoughtful idea, especially as a retirement present for someone that loves to be out in their garden. The winter months are especially hard for these types of people. Juniper bonsai trees give them an artistic way to relieve stress and to show their craft throughout the year. Later on if there interests get the best of them they can add other varities outdoor bonsai trees.

I really believe you will enjoy giving one of these living ornaments as a gift as much as the person receiving it will enjoy it for many years. For the elderly this is a very good gift idea in that they are not heavy not do they require you to be bending a lot to take car of them. The pruning tools are large enough to fit in anyone’s hands with out casing discomfort.

There are three main species or varieties that most people buy, Juniper bonsai trees, flowering and deciduous for outdoor use. Other information about taking care of each type of tree or where to buy can be found on this site www.the-bonsai-tree.com which is about buying indoor and outdoor bonsai trees with other information on flowering trees and indoor plant care.

The learning curve for pruning and shaping bonsai trees is actually quite simple. With the right tools anyone can get expect great results even beginners. These trees can live for over 100 years if properly maintained, which is also a pretty cool idea if you wanted to keep one in the family as a heirloom.

These gifts would go very well in a living room, office or even in the kitchen area as a home accent or accessory to you other home décor. They are small enough that the pots that you grow them in are just the right size to fit on a coffee or end table. If you wanted to get really into it you can add a bonsai waterfall or place it on a display table that is designed just for this purpose to fit your bonsai pot.

These are also unique gift ideas for someone that is into yoga or meditation principles. You can sit for hours just looking at the intricate design of the branches and leaves. Bonsais have a calming effect when someone is looking at them. If you are fortunate enough to get a flowering tree that also has a fragrance you are lucky.

Window blind controls

When buying blinds think of the type of control you want

I am a huge fan of HunterDouglas window blinds. There selection in the different styles of window treatments is very good. What you don't normally hear about is the quality of the operating mechanisms for raising and lowering these window shades.

Just about every Hunter Douglas product provides standard or optional safety features, though some may offer more than others. Safety in window shades and blinds are an important feature. Many children a year are seriously hurt from the pull cords or the blind falling too quickly when it is lowered.

Having safe window coverings is a serious concern with the elderly and parents of small children or even pets.
Read more about a few of the latest safety features that hunterdouglas has installed on their blinds:
The safety tassel is designed to break open under pressure should a child or pet become entangled in the cord loop. This is a standard feature on all Hunter Douglas horizontal blinds. The cord tensioner is a specially designed cord weight with spring tension and brackets which improves the safety of the cord loop.

A battery-operated remote control system allows you to raise or lower shades at the touch of a button, which means you don't have a need for cords. (this makes it an ideal choice for someone with arthritis or a disability that prevents them from stretching high) It's a perfect solution for hard-to-reach windows. A timer can be programmed to raise or lower shades at desired times, improving energy efficiency. All with the touch of one button.

The touch system allows you to raise or lower blinds with a single touch. This cordless system makes raising and lowering blinds and shades easier than ever. Push up to raise and pull down to lower. Your blinds or window shades stay right where you put them. No lift cords for a clean, uncluttered look. This system holds blinds and shades securely in any position - no constant adjusting, making it easy to raise your shades to an even height.
Vertical blinds outfitted with a wand eliminate looped pull cords completely, replacing them with a wand that remains safely out of a child's reach. This is a really good system for patio doors or large vertical window blinds.

The glide system is equipped with a single, retractable cord that remains at the same length whether the shade is raised or lowered. When the cords are moved to a slight angle, the shade gently lowers itself. This movement of the cord releases spring tension in a slow, controlled manner and the bottom rail floats down. To stop the lowering at any point, just move the cord to the opposite angle. To raise the shade, simply pull on the cord using short strokes. Each time you pull, the cord retracts to its original length. Constant cord length means there are never any long, dangling cords to detract from the appearance of the shade and also means increased safety for children and pets.

The number one place to shop for blinds is at blindsgalore - click here

Vinyl Window Blinds

The design of your window treatments will depend on the color and theme of the rest of the room. Vinyl window blinds can be a big asset to portraying a theme and their colors and prints can complete the ambiance you are trying to create.

Jungle print curtains will bring a safari feel to your home. Teddy bear blinds will give a child’s bedroom a special feel.

Sheers with a colored liner can add a very elegant tone to the mood you are presenting in the living room. Planning your window treatments carefully or with some decorating advice can make a wonderful difference to your home designs.

When choosing the color of your vinyl blinds, also think of which direction the window faces. Morning, noon and afternoon sunlight each produces a slightly different light in the room. This will effect how your blinds look during the day. Also a dark colored on the east side of your home may look too dark in the afternoon. A dark shade facing the south may attract too much heat.

Flor Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles are a new and exciting way to design your floors in anyway you want. This do it yourself home improvement project is fun, easy and best of all portable. Flor carpet tiles allow you to have wall to wall carpeting or an area rug to any size specification that you want.

The disney collections are ideal choice for area rugs in childrens bedrooms and even teenagers. The Martha Stewart designs are very upscale for the living room, dining room and as a kitchen rug.

Think of this type of modular flooring to be a build your own area rug or wall to wall carpeting. It is an ideal choice for renters that would like to have nice carpeting or area rugs and want to take them with them. It is sort of like a floating floor, the same as a laminate floor would be, just easier to put together. You can use this type of carpeting easily in a store, office or apartment where you might want the versatility to take it with you when you move.

FLOR is our choice because it is easy to install, and recently made even easier with what they call easy dots. These are one-sided adhesives that you place underneath adjacent carpet tiles, fasten the tiles to each other instead of to the floor. Easy Dots can hold together even the largest area rugs.

When it comes time to cleaning underneath the rug, replace a tile or disassemble a rug to move it to another room, Easy Dots™ make the job quick and simple. It also makes FLOR wall-to-wall easier than ever to put down. Install anywhere that is covered and dry with a smooth surface (if used on cement, the floor must be sealed with a non-solvent based sealant).
Decorative Wall Panels

Wall panels for decorating an office or your home.

What really caught my attention about using wall flats in my home was an article in Interior Design Magazine. These decorative wall panels have been featured at The Sundance Film Festival, W Hotels, MTV (TRL and The Real World), The Palms Hotel, NBC, HGTV, and continually appear in numerous movies and TV shows.

Inhabit's Embossed Wall flats are designed to expand in any direction with an automatic pattern repeat. Cover a existing wall, help disguise a not-so-smooth wall or add a modern pattern to any room setting.

These wall treatments are good for the environment too, because they are made from bamboo pulp, one of the world's most renewable resources. No trees were harmed in the making of this product.

Customize these panels by rotating every other tile or row, mix-and-match patterns or paint them to coordinate with your decor. The rule is there are no rules and the important thing is to have fun with it. It¹s low stress, low commitment and a big payoff in the way Wall Flats from Inhabit impact a space. Wall Flats can be used to do an entire room, one wall or to create free-standing-art pieces.

Coffee Maker or Coffee Brewer

You actually brew a pot of coffee because it takes longer and their is a process involved, you make a cup of instant coffee.

Manufacturers today try to get you to buy higher priced coffee brewers by adding more and more features that look cool but really are not necessary. These addons include custom brewing, coffee grinders and steel carafes built right into the machine, they are now becoming a standard feature. In reality though the difference in flavor does not warrant a 100 dollar difference in price. Flavor is governed on how much escapes through the top of the coffee pot while it sits. That's why your first cup which is normally poured as soon as it is brewed is better than the second cup. Flavor escapes immediately after and during brewing. Using a carafe does help but there is no substitute for a fresh cup of coffee. That is why French presses are becoming more popular.

You'll find manual-drip systems, coffee presses, percolators that brew individual cups or a whole pot full. These do have a lot to do with flavor. Percolated coffee is the best but takes longer to brew. Consumers buy more automatic-drip coffeemakers than these styles because they are faster. Black and Decker and Mr coffee are the two most popular brands made.

Coffeemakers come in all sizes from single-cup models to 12 cup and even larger urns for parties. At the low end are the single switch brewing and a plain metal hotplate. More expensive models have programmable timers, thermal carafes, water filters and possibly frothing capabilities. Most models make a pretty good cup of coffee. High priced coffee makers only have more features with nicer colors

Size of your coffee maker is dependant on how much coffee you like to drink. If you normally only have one cup of coffee before heading out in the morning a single cup machine or a two cup coffee maker is enough. You'll will use less coffee and waste less in the long run. Pod or the type that hold travel mugs are an option if you want just one cup at a time.

Most consumers buy two sizes of coffee makers, one or two cup machines (a coffee press makes the best cup) and a larger 12 cup machine for when having company. As with any kitchen accessory you should co-ordinate the color with the rest of your countertop appliances including accents.

Uncluttered Decorating

This is an article I was reading today and couldn't agree a more with it. Although I do publish information on home decor and decorating.

Decorating for the un-senses by Marni Jameson, For The Calgary Herald - Published:Saturday, March 01, 2008 she also has a book available - The House Always Wins

It starts out - Busy family homes need baking soda and soundproofing more than candles, soft throws and fountains. As a father of 5 teenagers at home I couldn't agree more. I really don't care if my kitchen is inviting me in, mind you if it did I figure it is possessed anyway.

As I help my wife in the kitchen (ok stop laughing now and lets just say thinking about helping) I realize its more about travel time and how many trips to the cupboard you have to take to get something. If you watch someone long enough doing a task even vacuuming you quickly see how much they are on their feet and how pretty little home accents just collect dust and get in the way.

The only real sensory feeling you need is what lots of bright light gives, thats what makes a room feel inviting and it doesn't matter if it's the bedroom, family room or kitchen or how expensive the decor is.

A home should be functional before anything else. Before you add anything in the kitchen you should ask yourself - will it save me time (cooking or travel). If it doesn't then look for something else. Let take pot racks for instance; if you have one hanging above the stove this can save you time from climbing in a cupboard for the pot you always use, but your kids seem to think it is supposed to be buried way in the back. This kitchen accessory is great if you have a sore back and can't bend as well anymore. You get the idea this is a useful item and can be very decorative at the same time.

Bedrooms need as little as possible to stay functional and organized, unless you enjoy clutter.Laminate floors with one area rug is the easiest to clean.

My thoughts (Marni Jameson broke it down like this)

Sight - A clean uncluttered floor adds a whole new dimension to a room.

Smell - If you like to use scented candles ( I don't allow them in my teenagers rooms). Choose a scent that is seasonal, spring, fall and Christmas time. Summer scents - well if you like the smell of cut grass go ahead on it.
Marni Jameson has a good idea listed in her article about noise. If you have a family room in the basement or a noisy bedroom beside you insulate the walls. You can have insulation blown in and this will keep the noise level down. Or buy all your kids mp3 players that only work with headphones.

The only point I disagreed on was "touch" the temperature in rooms. They should be kept on the cool side they usually heat up during the day anyway. My wife and daughters love soft blankets and pillows when watching TV. As long as the colors are co-ordinated with the other furnishings they will look good. What I had to do was add a blanket rack, because the throws were left just like that thrown on the couch.

For me food belongs on the kitchen counter unless you are entertaining or you have to make a special trip to the store at 10:00 o'clock at night because a few certain individuals seem to think you are only there to get them chocolate bars.

As far as bathroom lighting goes, the brighter the better. Side mirror lights are best, if you hear someone complaining about turkey neck. Having light shine from above a vanity creates a shadow under your chin and is not the best for putting on makeup. The most important part of lighting is not the design but the type
of light bulb you choose. I just want to add here that it is that time of year that we all should be out cleaning the garage. Treat this like you are decorating any other room in your home. You can read more about planning a garage storage area.

Decorative garden fountains

Water gardens and outdoor garden fountains

There is so much you can do with a garden water fountain to add to enhance your environment. Implement a soothing and relaxing sitting area by simply by adding a garden fountain in your water garden.
They go well with ponds, plants or even just on their own, depending what type of outdoor garden water fountain you choose.

Fountains have gained much popularity over the last few years and so your selection to pick from has also gotten much better. The pedestal type fountains are still really popular as the favorite for the backyard.
Some will be made of poly resin or others cast aluminum or cast iron. They will usually have some sort of statue or design on the top of them.

Then there are the smaller outdoor fountain statues, that will often be in a theme, like animals, fish, children and more. The children garden fountain wonderfully captures the innocence of youth in the craftsmanship of these pieces.

Many times you’ll want to match the garden flowers around the fountain with the rest of the plantings that you have in your yard. This will include the area around the ponds that you can build around the fountain.
If you think that you don’t have the experience to build a fountain yourself you should think again. There are many plans that you can buy that will guide you step by step to building the fountain and ponds that you want for your yard.

Fountains are just the garden eye candy for your water garden or pond

Water gardening takes careful planning and thought. According to accentfountains.com the most important part is choosing the right area to build your water garden. You can read more about choosing a water garden here.
This is normally the hardest part of the planning process because you can't afford to get it wrong. Once you have done this go their section of garden water fountains and pick an outdoor fountain or statue to that is realistic to the size of the pong your are building.

Novelty Mailboxes

Painted mailboxes, post mount and wall mounted - a safer solution for mail security

No matter where you live, having a secure mailbox is a safe feeling. Especially for people that are gone at work all day, or sometimes days at a time, you will want to know that your mail is safe and sound inside the compartment.

<img border="0" src="http://www.decormailboxes.com/painted-mailbox-deer.jpg"alt="painted mailbox with deer and newspaper holder">

Go here to find a secure wall mounted or post mounted painted mailbox in bright colors and pictures of hummingbirds, ducks, deer, flowers and trains.

One of the most popular painted novelty mailboxes has been the train and golf clubs, view more about these novelty mailboxes.

Hand painted lockable novelty mailboxes that are post mounted are probably your best bet for this. They are easy to install, come in a variety of styles.

Generally they are in a vertical style (which is more high than it is wide). The slot for the envelopes to slide through is located at the top and they fall into the box area. When you get home, you open the front door to the compartment with your key and take the mail out that way. It is easy and will prevent unwanted people from seeing your mail.

The painted designs and colors will vary, but there is a wide selection to pick from. Sizes will also vary and make sure to consider this before you buy. If you are often gone for a longer period of time, the larger security boxes may work better for you.
