Outdoor solar lights
Dancing by the light of the moon may seem like a very romantic idea. But most of the time is not very easy to do or possible. It can be though with a few simple sollar lights. Placed along the edges of your lawn or patio, this type of outdoor lighting gives you just enough ambient light to be seated outdoors comfortably.
If you are planning on spending time outdoors on your patio, you need outdoor lighting that will keep you safe and allow you to enjoy your yard or balcony after the sun sets.
There are many types of outdoor lighting that can help you make the most of outdoor spaces. Your local lighting store will be able to help you find specific styles of lighting to help you decorate your yard while keeping yourself safe. It is an ideal time of year to install these types of lights.
Many homeowners like cordless lights as their outdoor security lighting
Because solar lighting takes its power from the sun during the day even on cloudy days, it is the cheapest use of power to light up your property. Lighting outdoor areas this way is very economical and can be a good investment for commercial applications. However, be sure to get good-quality solar pwered lighting - after some time, you may find that your lights last for a shorter period of time. You may want to consider lighting that uses a dual alternative power source when needed. This will ensure that your property will always be lit when you need it.
Lighting Your Way in the Dark with Path Lights
Path lighting is important for the driveway or the path to your door or garden so that you can see where you are going at night. If someone in your household has poor vision, you will need path lighting to ensure that they do not stumble in the dark. Today’s path lighting can also be very decorative and can beautify your home, adding a soft glow to your property.
Patio Lanterns and Your Patio
Patio lighting is important if you are going to be spending more time in your outdoor living area. Patio lights can vary from very expensive light systems to very basic paper patio lanterns that are perfect and inexpensive for a summer night’s party or barbeque. Whether you decide to spend a lot or a little, backyard lighting can help you see where you are going in the dark and can allow you to spend more time outdoors on warm summer nights.

Candeloo lamp
What do you use as a portable light, when the lights go out
In the past I have hunted all over my home for a flashlight with batteries that worked. Normally when I did find my flashlight, I usually discovered that the kids had killed the batteries and never told anyone. My solution finally came when I was on a website called decormotif.com, looking for light for above my kitchen table, it was purely by accident but it certainly has solved my problem.
The light I found was a candela lamp, it came in 2 or 4 lamp style. How these work is when you plug them in they are continously being recharged, when the lights go out they come on automatically. Needless to say my younger children were quite happy about this when we did have a power outage, because of the last wind storm. They always seem to be surprised more than scared when the lights go out suddenly and it always panics there mother when they start to scream.
I was surprised to see just how much light these actually recahargeable lamps gave off when it was really dark. I had no need to go looking for my flashlight. Here is the real bonus that these rechargeable lamps give you. They are detachable from the charger which means you can take them anywhere you want.
There are all kinds of places you could use one of these lamps. The patio seating area is a good choice. When it starts to get a little darker outside, just pick a couple of these table lamps up and place them around where you are seated.
There are a couple of names these go by one is candela and then other is candeloo there kind of the lamp style names that most people are familiar with. The candela we already talked about which you can review here ( candela lamp ).
The one I purchased was the blue/green cadeloo lamp by vessel the other color that it comes in is orange/magenta both have an interesting design for a rechargeable lamp. They give off a really warm candle light glow, that can be quite romantic if you prefer not to use candles.

Light bulbs
How much you know about light bulbs?
This is an important question to answer when you are decorating. The type and strenght of a light bulb plays a major part in how a home accent or your wall decor will look. Different types of light bulbs, halogen, incandescent and florescent light bulbs can chand the color of your walls and carpeting. This has been a trick in home decor stores for quite awhile. This is also why sometimes when you buy something in a store you take it home and notice that it doesn't look the same and you end up taking it back. Clothing is probably the most common item that you see this happening.
This is why choosing a light bulb becomes very important in decorating your home.
When you look at a light in the lighting aisle of a hardware store you cant tell how strong of a light bulb is because all the lights are on which makes it harder to tell how much light the fixture is actually producing. So the next time you are buying a lamp or ceiling fixture pay close attention to the quality of light and whether the store is using a incandescent light bulb or a halogen light bulb it will make a big difference in what you see.

Lighting for the kitchen
Use your kitchen lighting to create an atmosphere in this room that people are drawn to.
Since there are many tasks performed in our kitchens, it makes sense that our kitchen lighting should be functional first, and then decorative. However, besides being used for food preparation, kitchens also serve as a social center in many homes.
A wide choice of kitchen light fixtures include incandescent and compact fluorescent recessed downlights for effectively illuminating counter and island areas with a higher level of light; surface mounted fluorescent fixtures for general lighting; and track lighting for additional light and highlighting of kitchen displays from table arrangements to art objects, utensils and cookware.
Bright, well-diffused, evenly spaced lighting fixtures from the ceiling are a dependable way to make sure all open spaces are free of annoying shadows or glare. The ceiling light should also illuminate the inside of the kitchen cabinets and drawers and allow you to perform most of your daily tasks in the kitchen. This type of lighting is also needed over a kitchen island where you want to use kitchen island bar stools for extra seating.
Without proper lighting in the kitchen, cooking and other kitchen activities can become a chore rather than a pleasure. You'll discover that the best illumination in the kitchen is not only functional but also adds a decorative and visual interest to the room - factors that combine to make your kitchen both an easy and pleasant place to work and relax in.

home lighting fixtures and design
Proper home lighting is an essential part of the living room and if you are lucky enough to have a large picture window, it can become the main focal point of the room and your main light source. However, many living rooms are used in the evenings when artificial lighting is necessary so you'll want general and ambient lighting, along with task and spot lighting. A low-voltage lighting system offers the most flexibility or you can install a central ceiling light fixture or chandelier with a dimmer switch and then add lamps for ambient and task lighting. When choosing living room lighting you need to consider the variety of activities that occur in the room such as general lighting for entertaining and watching television, task lighting for reading or sewing, and accent lighting for artwork, plants, and interesting architectural features.
Today, more and more homeowners are turning this room into a more family oriented area of the home with the addition of televisions, video games, and computers. These items require low-level ambient lighting that does not wash out the screen's image nor reflect into the viewer's eyes. Depending on which living room fixtures you choose, this room can be transformed into one that provides function, elegance and coziness all at the same time.
Reading requires task lighting that comes from behind the reader's shoulder and this can be accomplished by placing a floor lamp either at the right or the left of the reading chair. The bottom of the shade should be located at eye level to avoid glare.
If you have glass shelves, glassware or collectibles in the room, accent them by installing recessed light fixtures or track lighting that will provide both general and accent lighting. The use of low-voltage fixtures with tungsten-halogen bulbs will emit a bright white light that will make glassware sparkle, while providing added illumination for serving and cleanup.
But it all doesn't stop there, decorative home lighting has the ability to shape and form how any room in your home feels. These articles about different lighting ideas can help you choose the proper fixture that will give you the desitred effect that you are going for.

Entrance Way Lighting
Home lighting for the front of your home that is warm and welcomiing.
For the home, making a positive first impression begins right at the entryway. The entrance way lighting you choose can define the style and ambience of your home and makes the first impression when guests enter your home. Whether you are looking for functionality, comfort or total image, the foyer light fixtures that you choose, should create a welcoming feeling. This is the first space and sometimes the only space guests see of your home so you want to make sure it is well lit with a decorative light. The main foyer should automatically greet members and guests with warmth and lighting fixtures are the key to establishing the first impression.
- Home lighting fixtures for the kitchen, living room, bedroom, family room and foyer.
Many people choose a surface-mount fixture with a decorative shade for simplicity or indirect cove lighting to softly increase the overall ambient light level to create the desired effect. Others may choose a pendant or drop pan or a chandelier fixture for a more dramatic effect but whatever lighting design you choose, it should be both functional and complementary. Lighting should be bright, but not bright enough to create glare. Foyer lighting fixtures can create a congenial atmosphere, while providing you with the general lighting you need to greet guests and assure safe passage into other areas of your home.
There are so many beautiful options to this type of lighting that will suit any theme or décor of your home - whether casual, contemporary, eclectic, modern, transitional, or simply traditional. Other choices include lush mounted lighting and semi-flush mounted ceiling lights, multi-tied chandeliers, hanging pendants, and energy saving lighting options. Change your old lighting fixture and replace it with a new chandelier or ceiling fixture to immediately update and improve the rooms light and add charm. You will enhance the beauty of your home simply by the addition of your new entrance way light.

Bedroom lighting and lamps
Today’s decorative bedroom lighting ranges from basic to bold, dimmed to dramatic. If your are looking for a bedroom lamp that is for a particular task, first decide where the light is needed in the room, and then choose the appropriate bedroom lighting. The bedroom is the room where we spend the maximum amount of time – to sleep , relax and unwind , after a long tiring day and where we rejuvenate ourselves for tomorrow. A good way to update an existing bedroom is to simply replace a flush-mount ceiling fixture with a newer design or a ceiling fan. Change or add portable table lamps for a quick, inexpensive change.
By using a variety of inexpensive features such as dimmer switches, spot lighting on a special painting or sculpture or adding a fun and unusual accent lamp, you can easily transform your room for a whole new look. When it comes to choosing light fixtures for the bedroom there is something offered for every taste and budget.
Couples need individually controlled reading lights on each side of the bedroom and children will require extra light for homework areas. The baby’s nursery requires an installed dimmer or subdued lamp that allows parents to check on their children without waking them up.
- Home computers, sewing machines and reading in the bedroom need directed lighting.
- for a sitting area you should choose softer and shaded bedroom lighting fixture.
- Makeup tables require brighter light
- If you like to read in bed, either place a table lamp on your night table or use swing arm wall light to avoid shadows.
- If space in the bedroom is an issue mounted wall sconces over the bed can add background lighting to give you more room.
- If you are buying a lamp as a gift for an elderly person be aware that their eyes are more sensitive to glare, for maximum comfort, seniors should make sure bedroom bulbs are bright enough and covered by shades or bowl-type fixtures.

Unique spiral floor lamp
One of the more interesting floor lamp designs we have found is the metal spiral floor lamp. This unique torchiere features a twisting, wrought-iron frame with loads of appeal. The open swirl design gives a light, airy feel. It has a marbleized glass shade that adds a finishing touch. This lamp comes with a full-range dimmer switch and takes one 150 watt light bulb. The floor lamp measures 71 1/2" high and would go nicely with hard wood floors.
Another unique spiral twist body floor lamp that we like also has a side reading light. The sidelight with its adjustable arm adds flair and function. It has a satin nickel finish that looks really good. This torchiere takes two 100 watt bulbs. Side light takes one 50 watt halogen light bulb. Measures 73" high while the extra reading light has a 20" maximum reach. Lamp shade measures 13" in diameter. Side shade measures 4 1/2" in diameter. This would be a good floor lamp for an office or den.

Colored Glass Lamps
Tiffany lighting was inspired in the nineteenth century by an American entrepreneur by the name of Louis Comfort Tiffany. This stained glass designer created beautiful works of art from glass cut to perfection, soldered together and assembled by hand. There are original pieces that are worth a fortune today and are sought after by collectors. Tiffany lighting was and still is today considered a work of art and its popularity is growing.
What I like about this style is that it goes well in a formal living room or a games room with a pool table. Choose from table lamps, floor lamps, scones, exterior and chandelier styles. They will coordinate with any décor imaginable and their designs range from floral to exotic animal prints. The effect of the light shining through them is beautiful and adds warmth to a room. Some of the fixtures have a 3D effect to them and others are made up of hundreds of individual pieces. Their look is very unique and stunning.
There are authentic pieces of tiffany lighting that are antiques and heirlooms and their prices are in the thousands of dollars. The reproductions today are full of detail and range in prices so that they can be affordable to fit anyone’s budget and décor.

Swing arm wall lamps
A perfect lighting solution for dark hallways and stairways is a swing arm wall lamp. Normally you hard wire these in but it may be too costly or just not practical to have an electrician come in to install a wall mounted lamp. So ,ost lighting stores carry this type of light fixture in a variety of plug-in models.
In small bedrooms like studio apartments it may be be better to have a plugin wall lamp instead of adding a table lamp in a corner, it will give you plenty of light for your room and for reading. For offices and foyers swing arm wall lamps are ideal when you don't want to place small tables around for lamps to sit on.
The styles made today are traditional, pin-up and contemporary, which come in brass, nickel and brushed steel finishes.

Replacing your lamp shade
At a fraction of the cost you can change the entire look of any room just by changing the style and color of a lamp shade. Replacement lamp shades make it possible to redecorate without buying another lamp.
The right colored shade can provide an instant new look to freshen up old furnishings or match a new paint décor. Coordinating a new shade to an existing base is fairly easy. All you need to do is keep in mind are a couple of simple guidelines. Try looking for a shade that echoes some shape or curve of the lamp base. For example, an urn-shaped lamp can be matched with a flared shade that repeats the basic outline of the lamp base.
Similarly, a square, mission-styled base would work well with a rectangular or square-shaped shade. The height of the shade should be roughly 3/4 the height of the base, and the shade's width should extend past the widest part of the lamp base. Make sure that any new shade extends down far enough to cover all the electrical fittings and the base of the socket. Go here for information on how to measure for replacing your lamp shade.

Lighting Up the Ceiling
When it comes to ceiling lighting, there are so many styles and varieties, that you can easily find one to fit almost any style, theme or décor. Ceiling fixtures are available in styles of contemporary, traditional, old world and modern as well as other styles to choose from. They also come in a full array of colors and finishes such as black, white, stainless steel, bronze, brass, antique brass and more along with different shapes include- oval, round, square and rectangle.
These fixtures are generally divided into three types - flush-mount or recessed and semi-flush and pendant lighting. The flush-mount fixture fits closer to the ceiling; pendants, single lights suspended by tubing or chain; and chandeliers, fixtures with multiple lights suspended by chain or tubing and these fixtures provide general room lighting for the rooms in your house. They are available in incandescent, fluorescent and energy efficient compact models. The more specialized and ornate ceiling light designs include chandeliers, mini-pendants and ceiling fans with built-in light kits.
Semi-flush lighting fixtures will light up your ceiling as well as bounce light off the ceiling to light your whole room. Your ceiling height, your area and your physical dimensions of the room will determine the proper ceiling lighting fixture to choose from. They provide you with unique styles and designs for low ceiling applications. Semi-flush lights come with different kinds of glass shades that include: marbleized, faux alabaster, cut crystal, seeded glass, clear glass and frosted glass. Tiffany ceiling lights and tiffany semi-flush lights are also available. The proper ceiling fixture can add a decorative focal point to any room in your home.
Hanging fixtures shouldn't be hung so high that bulbs shine in your eyes, cast heavy shadows or leave awkward space between fixture and table. Hung too low, they are in the way and narrowly focus the light. Kitchen and dining room fixtures are generally hung 30-36" above the table or work surface. Many hang from chains that allow you to fine tune the height after the fixture is installed. When used over nightstands or end tables, they can hang much lower. The lighting that you choose for your ceiling will determine the total look and ambience of the room it is placed in. Just remember, you can easily add sparkle to those dark corners, set the mood for a dinner party or read a book more clearly, simply by the turn of a switch.

Kitchen Lighting Choices
Of all the rooms in the home and the one that should stand out as a welcome area, is the kitchen. Normally this is the room that everyone congregates in including company when have a large party. This is where you want the brightest light and where task lighting really shines.
You will want shadow less lighting over all task areas, like the sink, countertops and cooking areas. If you have an island you mayl want a hanging light over top of this too. One way you can do this and have a decorative feature at the same time is to hang a lighted pot rack over your kitchen island. More information about pot racks with lights can be found here.
The kitchen table should have a hanging pendant over top; your dinnerware always looks better under a brighter light. You will notice in most homes this is only a single light pendant and in many cases it doesn't quite hang over the middle of the table. To solve this problem put two or three small hanging lights above which works much better when you extend your table for larger families or for dinner parties.
The standard light fixture for all kitchens in the main cooking area should be one main fluorescent light this can be a 4 tube or 2 tube fixture depending how much ceiling area you have. Generally there should also be a light fixture above the sink area. For under kitchen cupboards you can place down lights or a rope light tucked up underneath.
If you would like to get more information on kitchen accessories or kitchen light fixtures go to our main site about home furnishings.

Ceiling Light Fixtures
Most surface light fixtures come with their own mounting hardware, adaptable to any standard fixture box. Heavier types, such as ceiling fans combinations or large chandeliers may require beefier support, such as a mounting bar or J-hook. Some pendants, wall sconces, and under cabinet lights plug into a nearby receptacle.
Flush mounted fixtures, which mount directly to a housing box, provide general illumination in traffic areas such as landings, entries, and hallways. Kitchens, bathrooms, and workshops often benefit from the added light of surface mounted ceiling light fixtures used in conjunction with task lighting on work surfaces.
Models in this category range from functional frosted glass globes to delicate, decorative wall fixtures. When considering a fixture, look closely at how light bounces off the wall or ceiling to make sure it will be directed where you want it.
Chandeliers and hanging pendants add sparkle in high ceiling entryways and above dining tables and breakfast nooks. Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, these decorative fixtures can give direct or diffused light or a combination of the two. It's always a good idea to wire such fixtures to a dimmer, allowing you to fine-tune their output. Swags—chain-suspended pendants with cords and plugs offer a movable alternative.
The size of a fixture relative to its surroundings is critical. A pendant used over a table should be at least 12 inches narrower than the table to keep diners or passersby from colliding with it. In an entry, be sure to allow enough room below a chandelier to guarantee safe passage for tall people.

Using lamps effectively
How to produce the effect of continuity in any room in your home with lamp sets. By lighting any room in your home using lamp sets you have the advantage of creating a feeling of stylishness and conventional beauty. Lamp that come as sets are available in a variety of models, including floor lamps, desk lamps, and table lamps.
Table lamp sets are available in a wide range of prices and styles. A four piece lamp set in antique gold costs as little as $100 and provides you with a floor lamp, two table lamps, and a desk lamp.
Four lamps will light any room in your home as a matching set, providing a pleasing look for the eye. Consider lamp sets when you needing multiple lights for one room. More light is always better and if you add a dimmer switch to a couple of them you can control the mood.
The idea behind adding more light in a living room or family room is to eliminate shadows or create them depending on the mood you are trying to get. If it is a tv room for instance you don't want bright light it makes it harder to watch tv. Conversation areas should be well lit but not to a point that you create a glare when someone is turned you way. Mos tof this can be controlled by buying different sizes of lamp shades in different colors ( go here for more information on replacement lamp shades)

Wrought Iron Chandeliers
Wrought iron chandeliers are a nice alternative to over powering crystal chandeliers. They can add a very formal look in a dinning room over a wood dinning table. If you are looking for a more French style the kathy ireland french garden chandelier is a great choice.
A more contemporary iron chandelier is the La Costa double tier copper chandelier, it has a warm look with contemporary overtones. Double tier design features curved arms, an antique copper finish and alabaster glass shades. Takes twelve 60 watt standard base base bulbs. Another very charming light fixture is the iron chandelier look with stylish scallop glass shades and has a dark weathered patina finish. It even comes with six feet of chain.
Decorating with wrought iron chandeliers opens up a whole new way of enhancing your home without have to paint or wallpaper. Classic and traditional chandeliers are always popular with everyone. It is a home accent that can change the look of a room just by changing the light fixture.

Essential Bathroom Lighting
When it comes to bathroom lighting, special consideration should be taken when selecting the proper fixture. Consider what tasks will be performed, how much light is required, and pay attention to any reflective surfaces, like mirrors that can cause unwanted glare.
Bathroom lighting fixtures come in a wide range of styles, colors, and materials and there are many styles to choose from, including modern, craftsman, tiffany, classic, and many others that have clear or frosted shades or finishes made from aluminum, brass or wood. Regardless of what lighting style you choose, be sure that it will be able to adequately light the bathroom. Also be sure to choose fixtures that will be easy to clean, so bathroom maintenance won’t be too much of a chore. If your bathroom seems dim, dark, or uninviting, it might be time to redecorate with new bathroom lights in the room.
It is important to place adequate light where it is needed for showers, shaving, or putting on makeup. While other normal light sources might enhance the overall effect of the bathroom, specific adjustments made with certain highlighting effects in mind can change the way the bathroom appears. Lighting is one of the key elements in creating a safe and comfortable environment, but a sensible lighting scheme not only gives the functional and design requirements of the bathroom but through some simple techniques, lights can create effects that may visually alter the space in positive ways such as making a room feel bigger and brighter or deeper and dramatic. Dimmer switches and bulb types can help save on energy use and a variety of effects can be created with these options. Fixtures can be placed beside the mirror, above it, on it, or in the ceiling.
More about proper lighting in the bathroom here
One of the different types of bathroom light fixtures is the bar light. Bar lights are a series of small torchieres mounted on a metal bar that attaches to the wall above your sink and counter top. Sconces are another type of bathroom light that includes fixtures that hold only one shade and one light bulb. Recessed lighting is a popular choice for ceiling illumination and these are simple, circular lamps that lay flush with the ceiling, so they don’t have any hanging parts to collect condensation and dust. The different types of bathroom light fixtures are designed to give you focused task lighting at a mirror, diffuse lighting above a shower or bathtub, or overhead lighting for the entire room. They come in several distinct designs, with an almost endless number of variations on finish, color, glass, and size.

Hallway and Stair Lighting
When considering hallway and stair lighting for your home, wall fixtures are a good choice. While traditional wall fixtures with arms remain the most popular form of wall-mounted lighting, more contemporary sconces are gaining popularity, especially for hallway or accent lighting.
Wall lighting can offer needed illumination levels to prevent accidents on stairs, especially when an overhead ceiling fixture is not feasible.
It is important for the stairs to be well lit to avoid casting shadows on the treads. This is best achieved by lighting the stairs in several places, wall washers are ideal for this controlled by switches at the top and bottom of the stairs for extra safety.
Hallway lighting should be bright enough to light stairs, corners, and any other potential hazards. The light should be bright enough to distinguish a blue coat from black, but not bright enough to read by. Hanging fixtures can provide an excellent source of general lighting, as well as create a stylish focal point for the entire area.
Scones are a good choice here and to provide adequate lighting for your hall, they should be placed every 8-10 feet at a height of 66-72 inches above the floor. If you select a sconce that uses a lower wattage bulb, you may want to supplement it with some recessed down lights and/or lights in the hall closet if the lighting here is not bright enough to cover the closet area.
Ambient lighting should be the main source providing a soft warm and cosy feel with an even balance throughout the hallway. A central fixture with a glass diffuser will be ideal for this and accent lighting will give focus when walking down the hallway. Lighting fixtures in this area of the home are usually left on for longer periods of time, so it is important to replace ordinary bulbs with energy saving bulbs that will eventually save you money.
Hallway and stair lighting fixtures are available in many styles, colors and finishes so choosing the perfect one to match your interior’s décor is easy to do. They also come in a full range of prices according to your budget, along with great guarantees and warranties.

Interior Home Lighting
Interior lighting is all about a person’s individual preference when decorating and lighting their home. They must first consider what type of interior lighting is needed for each room. This all depends on what the room is used for, who is using the room and what time of day it is generally occupied.
Ambient lighting gives a dark room overall brightness and has a huge affect on our mood and everyday tasks and is a very important feature of our homes.
The right lighting scheme can quickly turn a bland room into an exciting space. The colors of fixtures can determine the mood of a room also. For instance, red gives a feeling of warmth whereas blue or green gives off a feeling of coolness. The level of brightness also is important so that there is no eye- strain or glare when doing tasks.
For bathrooms the best light to see yourself in comes from side mirror lights and not from a light bar on the top. If you cannot fit side lights then go with no less than a 150 watts of total power.

About Lamp Shades
I found out there are really only five styles. Bell or empire, Drum, oval, rectangular and square. All of these look a little different but they all still measure the same. The most important feature being how the lamp shade attaches to the lamp.
You can usually find that the bell, oval and square lamp shades come in all three attachments spider, harp and uno. The drum and rectangular shades attach mostly by the clip on and spider wire attachments.
There are only 3 basic styles of lamp shades found for all common lamps whether they are desk, table or floor lamps.
1. Spider with Harp - This is the most common type of fitting for table and floor lamps.
2. Uno - normally found on smaller table lamps. No harp is needed as the wire fitting is permanently attached to the shade.
3. Clip On - found on smaller accent lamps and chandeliers.
Hanging Pendant Lighting
Ceiling lights are generally divided into three types - flush-mount or recessed and semi-flush and pendant lighting.
Pendant lights used as a decorative fixture can give you direct or diffused light depending on the style you buy. The best way to use this lighting styles is to add a dimmer switch to control the amount of light you need at certain times of the day or night.
Size is the most important factor when installing these lights. A pendant used over a dining table needs to be at least 12 inches narrower than the table itself or you will bump into it when moving around. This consideration is mostly for chandelier pendants.

Interior decorative lighting needs in the bathroom
Illuminating your home with decorative home lighting in the bathroom and other areas of the home
For grooming and putting on makeup, vanity lighting becomes the main feature in a bathroom or powder room. One of the biggest mistakes that people make is placing recessed lighting over the mirrors. What happens is they cast shadows on the face which makes it hard to see an even skin tone.
If your are needing designer lighting for the bathroom or would like to view and compare different types of lighting that you can use in the bathroom visit this online retailer;
Recessed lighting is better suited for the kitchen, as task lighting over the counter area. For the bathroom wall sconces work better on each side of the mirror, which gives you even light on both sides of your face. If your space is too small for this style, you can use a light bar above the mirror as long as it contains a minimum of 150 watts total in bulbs, 200 would be better. Don't forget about the shower area it too needs proper light. You could use recessed ceiling fixtures in this area.

Choose the proper light bulb
Believe it or not one of the most important purchases in home lighting are proper light bulbs. You can have one of the most beautiful light fixtures on the market, but it won't look good or produce the light you expected with the wrong light bulb in it.
Light bulbs are normally coded by a system that seems a little weird at times. Basically it is a code that defines the watts, shape and size. The numbers go like this: 50WR30 = wattage - bulb shape - diameter. Meaning it is a 50-watt R-bulb that is 30/8 inches in diameter. Bulbs are given in 1/8th inch diameters so a size of 30 is about 3 3/4 inches across. A A19 bulb would be about 2 3/8 inches wide. Often you will se a code for the pattern or beam spread. 50WR30FL the FL stands for flood light. VNSP would mean vary narrow spot or beam sort of like a flashlight.
Your four main areas are:
Type: Appliance, Candle blunt tip, Candle Flame tip, Compact Fluorescent, Globe, Halogen, MR-16,Par, Reflector, Standard Household, Tube and Xenon
Usage: 2-PIN, 4-PIN, Bi-Pin, Candelabra, Double Contact Bayonet, Double Ended, G-9, G8-8mm, Bi-Pin, GU-10, Intermediate, Mini-Can and Standard/Medium
Wattage: is from 3W to 500 watt
Voltage: from the standard line 120 V to the low voltage 12V
Incandescent bulbs
They give a warm comfortable glow that can be enhanced with a dimmer control. The draw back is that they are the most inefficient light bulb. These are the standard pear shaped bulbs that come in - clear, frosted and colors. They are also our main three way bulb for lamps.
Halogen Light Bulbs
Quartz halogen bulbs also referred to as tungsten bulbs contain a gas that produces a brighter whiter beam. They out shine all other types for task lighting and dramatic effects. The down side is they get very hot so you need to pay close attention and only use the specified bulb rated for that particular fixture.
Specialty light bulbs
These are your neon lights that the color is produced by a particular gas in a tube or line. Not normally used in the home unless it is in the form of a sign or neon lamp. Cold cathode is a high end light bulb that can be used in valances and coves.
High Intensity discharge
Mercury vapor lights are shaped like an oversized light bulb and used in gardens or for security lighting. HID bulbs produce a lot of light and use a small amount of power. Normally you see them in street lights or high up on poles in public areas.

Creating the mood with ambient light
Ambient light is usually created by lights that are either installed on walls or ceilings. They are surface mounted fixtures that provides diffused light that gently brightens up a room. Ambient light is not what you want to use for any particular purpose like counter top lighting where you need strong light without shadows. Most of the time you will want to use wall sconces just for their decorative value.
Another way you can create this effect is by pointing directional lighting or up-lights aimed at a wall which will produce a soft wash of light. Built in lighting hidden in valances cornices and coves also works well. These types of lighting fixtures are normally used in living rooms, dining rooms and tv rooms where you don't want a lot of glare or bright light. It is also the best type of light to help people look their best and to create warm atmospheres that are very soothing and stress free.
Creating this type of ambient light can best be achieved by using wall mounted lighting fixtures. Not only do they produce just the amounted of reflected light that you need but they will create a nice shadow on the wall.
You could also create this by a table lamp or floor lamp that is situated in a corner. Rope lights and smaller track lighting can also be used. Wall mount styles can be used as a main feature for hallways, foyers and stairs.
If you are trying to create diffused light in a dining room and you only want to have a chandelier in that room the easiest and cheapest way to do it is by installing a dimmer switch. You will also be saving energy.
One of the most important places to have proper lighting without glare and shadows is in the bathroom. Ambient light will create a nice even soft tone throughout any sized bathroom. One of the nicest wall light fixtures that I have seen is the modern style like this one that can be found at lampsplus.
